Nebraska Soybean Farmers Raise Funds For WSF SoyCow

January 20, 2009...Source: ASA Leader Letter...Soybean producers from Saunders County, Neb. launched a fundraising campaign last week to purchase a SoyCow unit through the World Soy Foundation (WSF) to provide nutritious soy-based foods to hundreds of hungry children in Honduras or Guatemala.

Nebraska Soybean Association President Debbie Borg presented a $200 check to the group to help kick start their effort. A SoyCow is a processing system that can grind and cook whole soybeans into soymilk, from which beverages, soya "cheese" (tofu), yogurt and other soyfoods can be made. The group is seeking to raise $10,000 to pay for the SoyCow. Saunders County soybean farmers are excited this commitment to the World Soy Foundation can help ensure that the benefits of our protein-rich soybeans reach hungry children," said Larry Walla, Saunders County state board representative.

WSF is already in discussions with CEPUDO, an organization that in Spanish means "We Can Do It." CEPUDO is headquartered near the capital of Honduras and provides training to rural areas on nutrition, development, aquaculture and more.

"The Saunders County initiative to buy a SoyCow presents a positive opportunity for the World Soy Foundation to leverage farmer dollars through expanded partnerships with hunger and development groups, as well as the U.S. soybean industry," said WSF Executive Director Jim Hershey.
